Resilient Roots

In the concrete jungle where I was raised,

Where gang violence and poverty blazed,

The streets were lined with the homeless and lost,

And danger lurked at every cost.

I saw the pain etched on every face,

And felt the struggle of the human race,

But in the midst of all the strife, I learned to navigate this urban life.

The gangs were fierce and always near,

But I refused to give in to fear,

I chose education and hard work,

To break the cycle and leave the murk.

The homeless searched for scraps of food,

While the privileged lived in luxury and good,

But I never forgot where I came from,

And I vowed to help those who had none.

Growing up in the ghetto was tough,

But it made me resilient and rough,

Now I stand proud of where I’m from,

And I’ll never forget what I’ve overcome.
