Who Wants Some Ocean Frontage?
Ungava Bay
Some thirty years ago it started
I believe,
Polar ice caps –
No more.
Gone.
Just like that.
We never realized how quickly it would happen.
We never knew the full extent.
How much things would change
How much
People
would change
so much of the planet,
It’s all Desert now.
A thick belt of sands wraps the world.
No one goes north of Colombia anymore
Or south of North Dakota
Why would you?
Nothing there.
And my country?
Canada?
Everyone came here.
God-damned well..
EVERYONE.
Our seas became lakes
and our lakes
Became ponds.
And coastline?
That’s all there is now.
Everyone lives on the water.
Everyone wants a beach.
You never know who much room you have in the freezer
Until you thaw it,
You never know how much lake frontage you have
Until you thaw it.
First they bought up Baffin Island
Great views from there,
So quiet,
Peaceful.
And the caribou?
Almost as if they’re domesticated.
What a grand place to live.
You can’t buy a view like that.
Evidently you can.
No real estate left anywhere
on the north shore.
Everyone wants Arctic frontage.
Nice place to live.
Quiet.
Not so damned humid.
And New York?
Who can handle that sort of heat?
And I have a little place
A little off the beaten path.
A little out of the way
On Ungava Bay.
It’s quiet
For now.
Although I hear talk of condos…
