by Dr. Bernard Onwuzuruike, Dr. Timothy Aboh and Mrs Gloria Shaibu

Our story begins with the definition of Illiteracy. Illiteracy may be simply defined as the inability to read or write. Some of the causes of illiteracy include ineffective educational system, cultural belief and religious belief.

The effects of illiteracy are numerous:

inability to keep proper records,

lack of living independent life,

inability to read road signs while driving,

inability to understand complex financial transactions,

inability to operate basic mobile devices.

Why is this campaign to reduce illiteracy in Nigeria important?

The campaign is important as it will address the causes and effects of illiteracy in Nigeria. Nigeria will benefit from having a more informed populace. Matured adults who were left out as a result of cultural and religious beliefs; and ineffective educational system. Out of school and dropout children will also benefit from this campaign.
