Adventure on The Salt River

Down the river we go

One of the best ways to spend an early Summer morning in the furnace that is known as Phoenix, Arizona, is to take a trip on down the Salt River. Options include taking a kayak, a paddleboard, or even a tube if you are looking to start the morning in party mode. I think the tube option is only on the weekends, which kinda makes sense to me.

For me, I like the paddleboard option, because I like to mix up the adventure with both standing up on the board and sitting down to take in the surroundings in relax mode. On this occasion, we set off super early in the morning to beat the heat.

When doing the paddleboard option, it’s best to do the adventure in a group. Reason being is that you will need at least 2 cars. Why? Well, because you pull in at one stop, get on the river and sail on down to another area where you get off the river, and you will also need a car here to put away your boards!

Speaking of the spot where we got on the river, it was a baptism of fire for me. It was my first time on the river, and we entered where the water was very lively. I negotiated it with some care and attention, and then the water settled for a while.

The depth of the river is very changeable, in some places it’s very shallow and other areas, it’s ~10 feet deep. There are 3 or 4 places along the river where you will encounter rapids, and you need to be on guard and ready to paddle with some authority — other than that, it’s plain sailing!

We spent about 2 hours cruising down the river, and we thoroughly enjoyed our morning. By the time we got off the river, it wasn’t even 9 am! It feels like you have nearly put down half a day at this stage, but let me tell you, it’s well worth it, and a fantastic way to start your day!
