Feeling Up a Freewrite

For those fighting a case of Inscribus Blockadium

Now that the new year is underway, I’m finding it hard to get back into the swing of things. Though I did write through the holidays, I slowed down as I had to spend time with family and do the whole “happy, merry, greetings” thing. Not that I minded, but it threw me into a tailspin I’m still trying to recover from.

So, I’m thrilled to have been added to The Bad Influence as a writer. I love this publication and have had a ball reading some of the posts here. I really love Xavier’s writing prompts. As a prompt provider myself (shameless self-promo here, kids), I’m always looking for something to spark my own imagination.

The other reason I love TBI is because of the “Write Free” section. I’m a firm believer that a good old fashioned freewrite is good for the writer’s soul. In fact, this piece is a total freewrite as I’ve been butting my head against a horrible case of inscribus blockadium. Then it hit me. “Hey, old broad. You’re always talking about how good freewriting is, prove it.” Yeah, I said that to myself.

For anyone who knows the rules behind a freewrite, mind you, I don’t play by the rules. For those who don’t, well they suck. An actual freewrite should be:

A.) Timed — about 10 to 15 minutes worth of just writing. No thinking, just writing
B.) Unedited — there is no going back and fixing your errors until time is up.

Yeah, that’s not gonna happen.

First of all, I can’t live by that timeline. I’m going to write until I have nothing left to say or until my head explodes. Whichever comes first. Second, I CANNOT let the typos alone until the end. That jacks up my head worse than not having anything to write about at all. Knowing that a word or phrase isn’t right causes me to stop and I can’t move on until it’s fixed. If I don’t know it’s there, that’s different. But if I fully noticed it, I can’t leave it alone.
