How Open Source became the driving force for DevOps?

Open source projects had made possible the vast adaptation of DevOps, at least to a notable extent, definitely there are a lot of closed source DevOps tools/services offered by organization like Atlassian, AWS, Google Cloud, etc. makes a lot of sense to invest money on, but still open source will always be the driving force for DevOps.

The Idea is clear, DevOps world doesn’t want to be lead by the vision of a company or a group of companies on where the future will head but rather depends on open source community which drives the attention of vast majority of developers to work on some critical problems/tools which leads to a sustainable development of an entire ecosystem, Surely there are established organizations also participating but the tools which are getting traction in the market are those which is less controlled by organizations and more by the open source developer community.

Five years ago it was an alien idea to develop something in-house and make it available to the open source community to grow as freeware or with a Copy-left licensing.
