8 Unusual But Effective Ways Get More Writing Done

Being productive just takes a bit of creative thinking

One day a friend showed me a picture of a device that promised to cure her inability to work on her novel for more than 20-minutes per day. The description below bragged that it had no internet connection. It was purely for writing. “It’s so awesome!” she told me, “And it’s only $500.”

I’m sorry. She paid $500 bucks for a device that amounted to nothing more than a computer that could not go online? That is insane. I understand the desire to get things done and to find ways to combat one’s procrastination. Still, it doesn’t make sense to buy an expensive bricked computer when there are so many other practical solutions.

This one is easy to do. Unfortunately it’s also too easy to reverse. Which means writers will find any excuse they can to flip the switch back on. So if you are one of those writers who lack discipline, keep reading for ideas that will give you better results.

Get the ingredients together for your favorite kind of cake. Then spend the time it takes to make it. No, this isn’t actually part of your writing but it is part of the process, trust it. Once the cake is in the oven you then have to write for a full hour. Why is this different from other timed methods? Because you will get a cake at the end! If you fail you have to throw the cake out, as punishment. In case you’re wondering you can’t give the cake to charity. You failed, you don’t get to feel good about yourself.

Challenge a hated rival to a write-off. Set it somewhere dangerous. Over an active volcano is best, but somewhere equally life-threatening will do. The first person who completes 5000 words wins! The loser must die. Sorry, that’s why you have to learn to focus.
